Demystifying DPIA: A Quick, Cheerful Guide

9 March 2024 By Georgios Georgiadis

Data Protection Impact Assessment

This cheerful guide on a topic that often feels like navigating a labyrinth in total darkness, DPIA! DPIA, or Data Protection Impact Assessment, is a process or framework designed to help organisations identify, assess and mitigate or, even better, minimise privacy risks with data processing activities. Sounds complicated, right? Well, not for long! We are here to demystify DPIA and make it as fun as a day out at Disneyland.

Untangling the Knots: Simplifying DPIA with a Smile!

Let’s start this journey by untangling the knots that have made DPIA seem like a complex creature from the depths of data protection regulations. Imagine DPIA as a friendly guide, who is eager to help you traverse through the wilderness of data protection. It’s like an adventurous friend who keeps you safe while exploring the wilderness by showing you which plants are poisonous, what paths are safe to walk, and where to set up camp.

Now, how does DPIA do that? Well, it’s like a detective, investigating your data processing plans, and highlighting any potential hazards along the way. It probes through your planned activities, asking questions like, “What kind of data are you handling?” “Who will have access to it?” “How will it be stored?” and “How long do you plan to keep it?” By providing answers to these questions and more, you’re giving DPIA the tools it needs to make your journey as safe as possible.

A Walk in the DPIA Park: Making Data Protection Fun!

Let’s make DPIA fun! Imagine taking a walk in the park on a sunny day. The birds are singing, the sun is shining, and you are prepared with a picnic basket filled with your favourite snacks. This is what DPIA can feel like when you understand how it works and the benefits it provides. It is not a chore, it is an opportunity to enjoy a safe and secure stroll through the park of data protection.

Think of DPIA as your picnic basket. It’s packed with helpful tools and delicious treats to make your walk in the park more enjoyable. These include a risk assessment tool that detects potential privacy risks (like a bug spray that keeps away pesky mosquitoes), a compliance checklist (your roadmap to staying on track), and a mitigation plan (your first-aid kit for dealing with unforeseen surprises).

By treating DPIA as a fun and necessary component of your data processing journey, you will find that it is not a complex labyrinth to navigate through, but an enjoyable walk in the park. So, lace up your boots, pack your picnic basket and let’s start walking!

In conclusion, DPIA is not a monster lurking in the dark or a tangled knot that is impossible to untie. It is your friendly neighborhood guide, a picnic basket filled with handy tools for your data processing journey. So, rather than viewing it as a complex task, let’s embrace it as an exciting adventure that helps us ensure the privacy and protection of the data we handle. Let’s demystify DPIA together, turning what once was perceived as a chore into a cheerful and beneficial endeavor.

Happy data-venturing!

Delphi Study

28 February 2022 By Georgios Georgiadis

delphi-procedure

The long-awaited Delphi study is about to start. I have already contacted several experts and received positive feedback from 16 of them. I would like to thank them all for responding to my invitation email and especially those who were kind enough to confirm their participation. I am very grateful to all of them because this study means a lot to me as a scientist.

As far as planning is concerned, all participants will shortly receive an email with information on the dates and material to be consulted. To avoid flooding their mailboxes, all information about the study will be made available on this website.

You can already visit our Frequently Asked Questions page (FAQ) and the page where we describe the different phases and our inner workings in each phase of the Delphi method.
